If I could, I would rate this a 6/5 stars. This is one of those rare books that is absolutely excellent. Sarah Sundin is a lovely author.
In Through Waters Deep, we are introduced to Mary Stirling and Jim Avery. I found myself really liking both characters from the start, although there were flaws with each that were just aggravating enough for me to want to see how they would grow. Mary's struggle with pride paralleled Jim's personal growth nicely, and was handled with a humanity that is often missing in Christian fiction (they don't find easy answers in their faith, despite the fact that they already have faith-it's not some magical answer). The mystery is introduced within a few pages, although it builds in intensity over the course of the entire novel. Looking back, I can see that the perpetrator was a clear decision-but I certainly wouldn't see it at first! Mary and Jim's growth as individuals and as a duo is heartwarming and inspiring. They help each other grow in faith and begin to see things in one another that only a genuine love would let them see. Sundin combines well-written mystery, a fascinating and thoroughly researched historical setting, slow-burning romance, and inspirational faith-building using talent that I've rarely seen. One of my favorite things about this book was the realistic love shown between the two main characters. It wasn't just a historical romance. It was a love that is healthy, powerful, faith-based, passionate, and ultimately realistic. I didn't want the book to end, and I can't wait to read the sequel!
The reluctant heroine, Mary Stirling, has read many Nancy Drew books. Mary finds herself immersed in mystery at the Boston Naval Yard prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. She also develops romantic feelings towards an old acquaintance, Jim Avery, who is an ensign in the U.S. Navy.
This is a sweet romantic novel, set in the historical and beautiful city of Boston. The characters are charming, and there is much to celebrate within the pages.
This is Book One in the Waves of Freedom series.
This sweet, adorable and suspenseful romance warrants a sure applause, and a "thank you" to Sarah Sundin. I mean, all the books I read from this author are delightful but this one was more so because I felt that I related to the heroine on critical growth elements. Excellent character development per usual. Fans of Sundin will enjoy this new series. I'm looking forward to the next installment to be released this May.
This book is fantastic! Mystery, suspense, history, and romance are combined by Sarah Sundin to make a wonderful read! The WWII setting is well developed, the characters are adorable, and the plot is fascinating! The Boston historical tidbits are both insightful and delightful. Readers will fall in love with Sarah's new series!
