Desperate for quick cash, college sophomore Samantha takes a babysitting job in the isolated mansion of the creepy Ulman family, unaware that a nightmare of unspeakable fear and torment awaits her when the ultimate evil is unleashed at midnight. From writer/director Ti West comes this acclaimed demonic thriller that's an unnerving return to late '70s/early 80s classic horror.

This slasher/horror film serves as a pretty good warning to never trust strangers and to especially never enter their home. Samantha is a college student who needs to make money, so she takes a babysitting job. After getting to the house, she is told that she will in fact be babysitting a man’s mother. While exploring the house, it becomes very apparent that her life is in danger. I actually felt like the performances in this movie were very well done and that the creepy atmosphere was perfectly executed. I would rate this movie 4/5 stars and recommend it to those who like good horror films. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

House of the 1970s Atmosphere -- before Freddy and Jason barged in and hogged low budget horror films. I swear, most of the movie is identical to the films it pays tribute to. Congratulations to the director, cinematographer, costume designer, hair stylist, etc. -- you take us back to the Saturday night creature features. Several stars from the era, like Dee Wallace, Mary Woronov, and Tom Noonan, give low key, humorous performances, which threaten to unbalance the tone -- what, I wondered, no John Waters? But it recovers in the action-packed third act. This is a slow-building film: some would say too slow. Ten minutes could easily be cut out of the first hour. But if you like a snooping around in old houses with an unknown menace behind every door, this film is for you.

Creepy movie. Made in 2009, but set in the 80's. It felt like an 80's horror flick.

This movie is what I've been looking for since "American Mary," by The Soska Sister's, because it has a similar creepy atmosphere, where it keep's you guessing at every decison this poor girl make's. I recommend it for any true horror-fan. Be scared again with this one.

Like other reviewers said, this is a homage to classic horror movies of the 70s/80s, from the premise (babysitter gets more than she bargained for) to the credits to the music. It starts slow, but then erupts in a way that is both gory and creepy. If you prefer your horror subtle and atmospheric rather than ultra-violent (like "Hostel"), then you should enjoy this. Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov are well-cast, as is the lead actress, who looks a bit like Margot Kidder circa "Black Christmas." Listen for Lena Dunham as a 911 operator. Also check out "Insidious" and "The Conjuring."

I was also amazed at how good this film was. It was creepy and just flowed well. I do recommend it for a nice stormy night!

This is a great homage to 1980s horror films. The story takes a long time to build up to the climax, it evokes a tense, what-will-happen-next response that keeps you entertained and wanting to know what will happen next. It won't disappoint. This is a great film if you liked Black X-Mas, Rosemary's Baby, Let The Right One In and the films of Dario Argento.

this moves slow for the first half or so but then picks up all the while your thinking "true events...unexplained" freaky. human-horror freaky, good. hollywood-scary-horror freaky, not so much.

Supposedly a true tale of Satan worship in some unidentified college town. Lured into "babysitting" on false pretenses, Sam ends up in a horrific mess.
One could skip the first hour and not miss much. However, once the creepiness begins it's pretty intense.

Landlady: I can tell you like it.

Samantha: Oh, I love it. It's perfect.

Landlady: Well, great. It's such a neat place. You know, I showed it to another girl this morning, but to be honest I did like her very much. She looked like trouble, and I'm way too old to be dealing with all that nonsense. I go a lot on my gut feelings, and I have a good one about you. You remind me of my daughter.
