"Serving aboard the Ananke, an experimental military spacecraft launched by the ruthless organization that rules Earth and its solar system, computer scientist Althea has established an intense emotional bond--not with any of her crewmates, but with the ship's electronic systems, which speak more deeply to her analytical mind than human feelings do. But when a pair of fugitive terrorists gain access to the Ananke, Althea must draw upon her heart and soul for the strength to defend her beloved ship"--Dust jacket flap.

I was excited to read this after seeing reviews but I was disappointed. It's a first novel so i could forgive stilted writing if the plot was gripping but it's a run-of-the-mill computer gains consciousness novel. So much of the detail work seems clunky: it's a spaceship with a singularity at its core but lightbulbs in the corridors. I skim-read the last half of the book but it just never drew me in.

I found the book both gripping and tense. It has a good dose of psychological horror as well as that creepy trapped in a small space without knowing who you can trust aspect.

There are two point of view characters -- one who is extremely capable, but faces staggering odds (from both the situation and the others on the ship) and one who is creepy in the extreme.

It's definitely the sort of tale that explores the grey areas of morality and, most especially, loyalty.

Higgins writing is not totally mature, but has an excellent quality to it. In this book, she takes a fairly well worn trope and makes it new and gives it unexpected qualities. I would put her down as a writer to be watched. One of my first thoughts is that I will probably not be around for the full flowering of her writing talents. Seriously.

This book is a talky story of big bad government-corporation against the righteous freedom fighters warped in a superficial science-fiction cloak. Characters poorly drawn caricatures and a whinny protagonist.
