My first experience of a Stuart Neville novel and I will be reading more from him. A shocking crime and the book moved along at a great pace to the conclusion. There was a point where I thought DCI Flanagan made stupid decisions but overall the quality of the writing and story was worthy of 5 stars.

The first book in the DCI Serena Flanagan series

Neville's best yet. He's really hit his stride on this one. Yes, Flanagan makes some dreadful blunders...just like us common folk.
Give us more Stuart!

This is one of the most disturbing, unpleasant books I have ever read. Because it was well written, I read to the depressing end, but scanned a lot. I totally agree that the actions by a seasoned officer were unbelievable and the book began to fall apart at this point for me. I will not be looking for any more by this author.

Dark, violent and compelling. Agree with reader "Emerge" that DCI Flanagan is a weak link in the book. She makes such poor decisions, you wonder how she ever became and cop and attained any rank at all. This isn't your typical "I'm a good cop because I'm a rogue", this is more "I'm a lousy cop who makes terrible choices and somehow still holds onto my job because.. [we don't know why]." Ugh.

Really enjoyed this psychological thriller set in Ireland. Look forward to reading more of Stuart Neville's books.

Stuart's name is mis-spelled in the catalogue record

Solid police procedural but not up to his usual standards. The story of the boys is compelling but it's the MC DCI Flanagan who drags down the overall plot. For a supposed seasoned veteran cop she makes decisions based on emotion that will have you thinking "Wow, what an incredibly bad idea...".
Still, because Neville sets the bar so high, even a so-so book from him is better than a lot of the stuff out there.
