As the mega-talented creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder, and the single mom of three children, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say NO when an unexpected invitation arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. The side benefit of saying No for an introvert like her: nothing new to fear. Then Shonda's sister laid down a challenge: just for one year, try to say YES to the invitations that come your way. Shonda reluctantly agreed, and the result was nothing short of transformative. Shonda Rhimes chronicles the powerful impact saying yes had on every aspect of her life, and how listeners can all change their lives with one little word. Yes.

I gravitate toward memoirs and like them even better if their story is inspirational, so I enjoyed Shonda Rhimes’ Year of Yes. While her writing is a bit more self-promotional than I prefer, she is a convincing champion of self-awareness and personal growth.

Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind "Grey's Anatomy", "Scandal", "Private Practice", and "How To Get Away with Murder".
She was challenged when her sister muttered six words - "You never say yes to anything". With this in mind, Shonda said yes to Dartmouth's commencement speech, yes to being interviewed by Oprah, yes to health, and yes to the freedom of play. She also write about how saying goodbye to the character Cristina Yang was so difficult.

I liked Rhimes’ premise, the attitude that one’s life expands with new capabilities and personal growth by saying Yes to things that scare us. I admired her writing style – confiding, witty/funny, attention-catching images. In listening to the audio version I got distracted by the tone of her vocal inflection (that I may have misinterpreted) and heard self-glorification in the frequent repetition of her stellar accomplishments. It’s an entertaining memoir firstly, and a motivational help, secondly, by her personal example.

I loved hearing the author read her story and how she was able to change her life around. Great read when you are looking for some inspiration for positive change to come your way.

I really enjoyed listening to Shonda describe her Year of Yes. Her story centers around lessons she's learned about accepting herself and getting more out of life. While listening, it hit me how much of Olivia's voice (from Scandal) is Shonda. I don't think I would have enjoyed reading it as much as I did listening.

I thought Shonda Rhimes' story was inspiring and authentic. I loved the audiobook and listening to her tell me her own story.

I purposely checked out the author reading her audiobook version. Glad I did not check out the book. Not impressed and I was kind of disappointed. And I am not a hater. Kudos to Her Highness, Queen of ShondaLand, the self proclaimed, "Badass." I was a faithful GA fan for years, so-so with Scandal, nothing for Private Practice and HTGAWM from time to time. Worth a browse, not a read.

You can quit a job. I can’t quit being a mother. I’m a mother forever. Mothers are never off the clock, mothers are never on vacation. Being a mother redefines us, reinvents us, destroys and rebuilds us. Being a mother brings us face-to-face with ourselves as children, with our mothers as human beings, with our darkest fears of who we really are. Being a mother requires us to get it together or risk messing up another person forever. Being a mother yanks our hearts out of our bodies and attaches them to our tiny humans and sends them out into the world, forever hostages.

Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be. Being traditional is not traditional anymore... You don’t want a baby? Don’t have one. I don’t want to get married? I won’t. You want to live alone? Enjoy it. You want to love someone? Love someone. Don’t apologize. Don’t explain. Don’t ever feel less than.
