"Loosely based on the real-life occupation of a half-completed skyscraper in Caracas, Venezuela: the Tower of David. In this fictional version, six hundred damnificados--vagabonds and misfits--take over an abandoned urban tower and set up a community complete with schools, stores, beauty salons, bakeries, and a ragtag defensive militia. And so begins an epic siege."--Back cover.

Very unique. Definitely worth reading. By the fourth or fifth chapter it finds its rhythm and you'll get pulled along as the story builds its momentum.

According to writer and poet Jimmy Santiago Baca, this book should "be read by every politician and rich bastard and then force-fed to them--literally, page by page." I'm not sure what that would accomplish Jimmy. Inspired by an actual unfinished skyscraper in Caracas that was inhabited, "Damnificados" is part social commentary about class and welath and part Ballardesque dystopia (see "High-Rise"). Author J.J. Amaworo Wilson is Nigerian-English, but was born in Germany and currently works in New Mexico. Recommended.
