This is an unusual book, and recommendable partly because of that. A straightforward plot, so the enjoyment is in the writing and in the highly detailed accounts of the characters and what they go through physically and emotionally. The wording is sometimes eccentric, and transitions occasionally tough to folllow, the first of which may be a result of translation - I'm sure my French is not good enough to tackle the original, since I would have needed a dictionary to fully understand some of the English!

How fragile our lives are! This book was very good. Gripping, beautiful and impactful. I would recommend this as a book that almost anyone could read and get something from.

A beautifully written book that helps us to confront the reality and importance of organ donation.

Sorrow and tension are present through this whole book, peppered with hope. A truly staggering piece, with beautiful prose that's stylistically challenging but compelling in its complex portrayal of human lives. The translation work is incredible. Read this novel as quickly as you can; stop and consider how incredible and unlikely life really is.

Beautifully written, this book tells the story of a heart transplant from the perspectives of family members, doctors, nurses and others intimately involved in the process. Beginning with a horrible car accident and concluding with a new heart for a critically ill woman, the characters are believable and the story is compelling in this age of medical miracles. There isn't a "what comes next" feeling in reading this book, as it is clear from the beginning what will ultimately happen, but observing the characters during the process is beautifully written.

A moving and surprisingly tense story about parents faced with the decision of taking their injured son off life support, while those who know how useful his organs can be to others wait in the wings. I read this "in one gulp" - great writing.

A very relevant topic in a novel from a French author. Her 2nd translation into English.
This June 2016 week, the low rate of organ transplantation is being highlighted in NZ.The need for a donor register is once again being requested.
Here is an excellent piece of fiction, that is "bracingly topical"
I give it 4+ STARS
