After seeing the down-and out character film “The Man with the Golden Arm” based on the award winning novel by Nelson Algren, I found this new documentary on the life of Algren. The rights to make a film from the “Golden Arm” book had been owned by the great actor John Garfield, but he died at the age of 39 very possibly because of harassment for being involved with communism, so his character was eventually played by Frank Sinatra. Unrelated to the Garfield problem, Algren had his passport confiscated by the government because he associated with communists. You begin to see that if your art form relates to the down-and-out, the right wing will be out to screw you. If you are a wealthy scam artist, screwing the middle-class, well the right wing says go ahead.

Even with several classics to his name, Algren is sadly undervalued. Hopefully this solid documentary lures the uninitiated towards the prose of one of the best writers America ever produced.
