A pair of preppy yet constitutionally mismatched American cousins, a salesman and a navy officer, argue about romance and politics while working in the beautiful Spanish city of the film's title. Set during the eighties, it explores topics both heady (American exceptionalism, Cold War foreign policy) and hilarious (the ins and outs of international dating, the proper shaving method).

Another enjoyable film from Whit Stillman- another comment made mention that you'd enjoy this film more the second time around- and they're right! Great dialogue in this film.

Refreshing. This is a movie where dialogue is king. It made me think of an Aaron Sorkin walk-and-talk, except on a grander scale: in the commentary, the actors say that they spent 4 weeks filming in the car driving all over Barcelona. Why hasn't Aaron Sorkin done a road trip movie? Ha, I just thought of a new game: How many degrees to a new genre for Aaron Sorkin? The drive-and-deride ?

Forms a loose trilogy with "Metropolitan" and "Last Days of Disco." This is the weakest of the three.
