"Commander Thomas Pitt, head of Special Branch, is called to the scene of a brutal explosion in the heart of London. The bomb was set off during an important--and secret--police raid, killing several officers, and the government suspects anarachists are at work. But what Pitt discovers is far more disturbing: the explosion was not a terrorist attack meant to sow chaos, but a calculated means to commit a targeted murder. And the evidence trail leads him straight to a deadly crime that is set not in the back alleys of London, but in the drawing rooms of London's elite"--

This book was quite a fast read. For those familiar with the series, I thought the author spent less time developing the characters and their situations and a bit more time than usual on the plot and the action. Like other reviewers I found the plot very timely with themes of police corruption, terrorists, immigration, and global unrest. Another excellent installment in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series. Anne Perry never disappoints with her fascinating, detailed portrayal of the lifestyles and times of Victorian England. I loved reading this, and I think her fans will enjoy it as well.

This book starts slowly, but it gets better and better until it ends with a dramatic plot twist! Although this book takes place in Victorian England, there are many parallels to our times: fear of bombing by anarchists (terrorists), fear of immigrants and people who look different and have different religions, fear of police corruption, drug addiction, politicians who play on people's fears for personal and political advantage, etc. As always in this series, the recurring characters are interesting and admirable. This series should be read in order, but if you have read the earlier books, please stick with this one to the end. You will be glad you did!

Another good mystery story full of police corruption, divided loyalties and drug addiction.
