Joseph Stalin - the supreme leader of the Soviet Union - was a tyrant responsible for the death of millions. He also had some unlikely relationships during the Second World War. This ambitious series uses exclusive evidence gained from the actual conversations and secret meetings Stalin conducted. Dramatic reconstructions carefully sourced from archive material, reveal how the great leaders decided the future shape of the post-war world. These decisions had immediate and often harrowing effects for those on the ground. Their story is told through documentary footage, dramatic reconstructions and illuminating interviews.

Superb treatment of the Eastern Front of WW II. This gave great insight into the historical roots of the Cold War. In 1942, Germany and Russia signed a non-aggression pact. After Germany defeated France, Germany invaded Western USSR nearly stymied the ill trained and ill equipped Red Army. Moscow and Stalingrad were both threatened with German capture. Stalin made allies with Britain and the US, urging a Second Front -- an assault to free France. This would divert German soldiers away from Russia. But Britain had its hands full with the Battle of Britain. The US was reluctant to expand its role in the war. The Second Front became D-day in 1944. Stalin, however, believed that neither Britain nor the US cared about Russia-- they only wanted the Russians to fight Hitler. The bad blood only grew after the end of the war, and the negotiations over Russia taking control over Eastern Europe. The Cold War ensued and persisted after Stalin's death.

A most important story.

This is probably an excellent film for people who really want to know more about WWII. But after about 10 minutes I realized that that group did not include me.
