IN MY OPINION, HORRIBLY OVERRATED...

even if it does have a mix of thriller with philosophical insight. The end is crude; the whole issue of Satan mixed with the adventure in the book didn't quite cut it for me. One or the other would have been great, but mixed, it felt like the book tried to accomplish too much without managing to reach the finish line with either attempt

I got this book years ago on the strength of the very first page. I've never *read* such a compelling first page. I ended up reading into the wee hours that night to find out what happens. There are some flaws in the book but mostly it's a fascinating roller-coaster mix of Journey to the Center of the Earth, DaVinci Code-like religious sleuthery, gut-wrenching horror and awesome heroism.

Hmm...I may just go re-read it...

An interesting premise that doesn't quite "work." The author skips around a lot, so the story is hard to follow in places and you don't spend enough time with any particular characters to care much about what happens to them. Also rather tedious and overdone for shock value.
