"Russo and Tilla's excitement upon arriving in Rome with their baby daughter is soon dulled by their discovery that the grand facades of polished marble mask an underworld of corrupt landlords and vermin-infested tenements. There are also far too may doctors--some skilled, but others positively dangerous. Ruso thinks he has been offered a reputable medical practice only to find that his predecessor, Doctor Kleitos, has fled, leaving a dead man in a barrel on the doorstep and the warning "Be careful who you trust." Distracted by the body and his efforts to help a friend win the hand of a rich young heiress, Ruso makes a grave mistake, causing him to question his own competence and integrity. With Ruso's reputation under threat, he and Tilla must protect their small family from Doctor Kleito's debt collectors and find allies in their new home while they track down the vanished doctor and find out the truth about the heiress father--Russo's patient--and the unfortunate man in the barrel."

This one was a little slower than her other books, but I still enjoyed it. They were in Rome so the action was a bit less. But they will be going back to Britain so the action should pick up in the next book.

After Ruso, Tilla and Mara (their adopted baby daughter) arrive in Rome, life is not as wonderful as Ruso thought, and Tilla tries to smooth things over by being a "good Roman wife". This does not work well, but her ability to defend her family and outwit threatening people who show up at their door keeps them relatively safe. She and Ruso gather information to unknot the various mysteries (there are several) which overlap in this book. It does help to have become acquainted with the main characters and their history before reading this one.
