I don't read many Regencies but this one is set far from the ballrooms of the British "ton" (le bon ton, or fashionable society). When courtesan Charlotte Perry learns that the Royal Mint is offering a reward for the discovery of a cache of stolen coins, she jumps at the opportunity to build a new life for herself and her daughter. On her treasure hunt in the countryside, she runs into Benedict Frost, whose war injuries blinded him and ended his career as a naval lieutenant. Initially adversaries, they realize it is wiser to work together. Both Charlotte and Benedict are tenacious, likable characters facing real issues, and their romance is exquisitely written.
