Tin Machine consisted of ★ David Bowie on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, ★ Reeves Gabrels on lead guitar, ★ Tony Fox Sales on bass, and ★ Hunt Sales on drums (both Tony and Hunt are the sons of comedian Soupy Sales; and worked with Iggy Pop from 1975 to 1977 in Los Angeles and Berlin).

Guitarist ★ Kevin Armstrong was an unofficial fifth member of Tin Machine, playing on both the first studio album and first tour. Armstrong played in the band for David Bowie’s Live Aid appearance in 1985, and collaborated with Bowie on the soundtrack for the 1986 film Absolute Beginners.

★ Tim Palmer (an unofficial sixth member of Tin Machine) contributed percussion and additional piano on Tin Machine's second album. After producing Tin Machine's two studio albums, Palmer would go on to mix Pearl Jam's grunge album Ten in 1991.

★ Eric Schermerhorn (an unofficial seventh member of Tin Machine) performed additional guitar and backing vocals during Tin Machine's 1991–1992 "It's My Life Tour", which can be heard on the album "Tin Machine Live: Oy Vey, Baby". Later Schermerhorn played guitar with Iggy Pop on the 1993 "American Caesar" album and the 1996 "Naughty Little Doggie" album.

"Bowie looked to one of his favorite bands at the time, the Pixies, for inspiration."

ps: Hunt Sales was born on ★ Lou Reed's 12th Birthday.
