Rita Tushingham won best actress at Cannes Film Festival in 1962 for her portrayal of Jo, a working girl in a Manchester suburb who finds love briefly with an Liverpudlian sailor of African origin. After the sailor steams out of port, Jo gets her own place, a decrepit loft, while working in a shoe store, where she meets the delightful gay Geoffrey, played by Murray Melvin, who won best actor at Cannes in 1962. They become roommates. Dora Bryan, who plays Jo's mother, is excellent as the aging trollop attracted to a younger loutish man. What I really like about this classic of British realist cinema is the cinematography of Walter Lassally. The canals and factory smokestacks of England's postwar industrial North never looked so good. Its too bad that the future imagined by the Free Cinema movement never arrived. At least we have the film.
