"From Academy Award nominee, Emmy nominee, and Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson comes an inspiring book about family, friends, the hustle required to make it from DC to Hollywood, and the joy of living in your own truth. With a sensibility that recalls her beloved screen characters, including Yvette, Queenie, Shug, and the iconic Cookie from Empire, yet is all Taraji, the screen actress writes of her families, the one she was born into and the one she created. She shares stories of her father, a Vietnam vet who was bowed but never broken by life's challenges, and of her mother, who survived violence both in the home and on DC's volatile streets. Here too she opens up about her experiences as a single mother, a journey some saw as a burden but which she saw as a gift. Around the Way Girl is also a classic actor's memoir in which Taraji reflects on the world-class instruction she received at Howard University and the pitfalls that come with being a black actress in Hollywood. With laugh-out-loud humor and candor, she shares the challenges and disappointments of the actor's journey and shows us that, behind the red carpet moments, she is ever authentic. She is, at heart, just a girl in pursuit of her dreams"--Dust jacket.

I've been a fan of Taraji P. Henson's acting for years and enjoyed reading her memoir. In her book, she pulls back the curtain and gives a personal tour showcasing memories from childhood to her adult years. Her story is a behind the scenes peek at her experiences on and off the screen. I'm glad I took the tour. I wish her a long and successful career.

A well-done memoir by an Artist who illustrates her realness on every page. Ms. Henson invites the reader into her life & world with an ease which speaks to her confidence and empowered self-worth. She shares her in-depth approach to the character development she brings to her roles and for a lover of the medium it is an illuminating and sublime revelation. A truly enjoyable read which crisscrosses the emotional gambit from laughter to sadness, with an ample amount of photos portraying the child, the young woman, and the Artist!

Humorous, inspiring, honest, authentic. This book is ideal for young single mothers, all women of color, all women in general, and the men who love them. Your dreams are attainable as long as you work hard and stay true to yourself. The audiobook is narrated by Taraji P. Henson herself, and she really makes her story come alive. I can't recommend this enough!

Taraji is the only star I've read about who can tell their life story as though it's a story and who feels my pain and sentiments when it comes to friendship. If I grew up with her, we'd definitely be friends because she doesn't sugarcoat. I love this book.

This autobiography was too slow moving. Too much childhood information. The writing style did not inspire me to continue which is a shame because I am sure that a richness of information was deleted to include excessive childhood information. We were reading the book because of Taraji's acting career & not her childhood. Many autobiographers make this error.

This book was an inspiring biography and very enjoyable to read. I identified with some of the experiences that were shared. Taraji shares personal plights of childhood, influences gained from her parents, aspirations, parenting, recognizing her gifts & talents and how to mold and craft them. I also found myself laughing within a few chapters. I would recommend reading this to anyone that is familiar with her work and those interested in pursuing their dreams. She offers little Gems of inspiration of how she made it in the business and life.

I will recommend this book. I did not get a chance to finish this book, but I will be purchasing it for my personal book collection at home. I only got a chance to read Chapter 1 through Chapter 7. I just checked it out at the library first to see if the book was worth purchasing. I must say it is worth purchasing! I think every Cookie and Taraji fan should have a copy of this book! I love the fact the Taraji knew at a early age what she wanted to do in life. She NEVER gave up on her dream to be an Actress on the Big Screen.

I went into reading Taraji P. Henson's memoir simply wanting to know more about her leap of faith decision to leave D.C. for LA with a few hundred dollars to her name and her toddler in tow. But now that I read her memoir in its entirety (in less than 24 hours might I add), I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Around The Way Girl is a really, really good book! It's by far one of the best memoirs that I've ever read... seriously! Taraji's writing is authentic and raw but easy to follow and to embrace. I couldn't put the book down for more than 30 minutes at a time, that's how engaging & dope her story is.

If you're looking for a good memoir to read, I highly recommend Around The Way Girl. I'm really considering buying her book for my personal book collection, that's how good it is! I'm definitely going to recommend it to some of my friends.

...rather than focusing on finding a man so that I could have a baby, I could take my time, examine those frogs under the light, find the warts, and know, for sure, that it wasn't right before I settled in and wasted precious time. This I appreciated most of all.
