This is not the 1963 b&w version directed by Peter Brook, but a color, modernized version that came out in 1990. I taught the book to my sophomores and most of them found the film boring. This updates the story and makes the characters all American. Fans of the book will no doubt be annoyed by the many changes they make (the swearing, the adult who survives, no mention of a war). As a movie, it is more violent and adventure-like than the British version, but seems to lose much of the meaning. Balthazar Getty who plays Ralph is the only recognizable name. Piggy is good and the kid who plays Jack looks like a young Bowie. The pig's head is good too. They spend a lot of time in their skivvies so I imagine this might be a favorite with, um, people who like young boys. Directed by some dude I've never heard of named Harry Hook, which I think he should've changed to Harry Hack.

Maybe I have a soft spot for this movie from my youth, but it still seemed pretty effective. The acting isn't great (They're a bunch of kids) but its not horrible. The story moves along at a great pace and unfolds into a tense thriller as the shipwrecked lads lose their civility.

Haven't read the book so felt a little unprepared. I'm not sure if I was taken aback by the content because someone had thought of it and written it or because it felt so plausable for humans to behave in such a way. Effective none the less

I really enjoyed this movie, acting was great, script was great (even if it was changed from the book - but it is only an adaptation). Done very well, and I actually laughed at some of the things the boys said!! Realistic, and you could imagine those sorts of things happening if people were put into the right situations

I really liked this movie, maybe because I watched it before ever hearing of the highly revered book itself. I felt so bad for Piggy and then for Ralph!
