I think this book would appeal to young fans of Jo March, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Anne Shirley. It's another story of a spunky young girl from days of yore who loves books. It was inspired by the true story of Patricia Polacco's grandmother. The illustrations are colorful and sweet.

FYI, the mermaid's purse of the title is a caul, not a shark egg.

Passion, love, loss and community.
Patricia Polacco enchants us once more with a story of thinking outside the box, following your passion, going through emotional turmoil of loss through a natural disasters and having the worst critics restore it all. An incredible tale for young and old with a deep appreciation for this author's ability to capture what's real in life.

A lovely story of how one girl brought a love of books to her farming community in the 19th century. Not only that, but it's a true story! Even better!
