This spectacular drama reimagines one of literature's most enduring heroes, the great warrior Beowulf. Featuring an ensemble cast of fascinating and fantastical characters, this epic drama follows Beowulf as he strives to be a man as well as hero, challenging the notions of good and evil, heroes and villains, and the rule of law against one's moral code.

Creative re-imagining of Beowulf's childhood and journey into manhood as the local Reeve, before he became the mighty hero/slayer of Grendel. There's lots of violent swordplay which is balanced out by pretty good character development and an engrossing portrait of how a female leader (The Thane) negotiates ruling as woman, when there are many who doubt her. The blacksmith is a woman with a warrior-in-training daughter. Beowulf can come across as a bit too saintly at times, although Kieran Bew does well in this role as the sensitive tough guy who really just wants a home, family, and friends. Trolls (who have a thing for salt, who knew), monstrous dogs, pirates, two-faced family members, secret assassins, shapeshifters, and a seductive murderer round out the cast. There are four discs here, leading up to one big battle to see who will see their vision win out. Minor critique: the CGI effects can be clumsy at times and sometimes the dramatic speeches are stilted, as if the characters are merely reading their lines.

Beowulf was a mythic hero. This one is second rate and so replete with second rate characters it just gets boring. Short form, who cares? Not me.

Apart from the title 'Beowulf" the series is about an alternate world peopled by monsters. This world has a history of god like giants ruling, but now long gone; perhaps!. Their huge structures are now impressive ruins. A few soldiers try to hold the enemy, at the partly ruined Giants bridge. It is a bit like the 300 Spartans holding off thousands, but in this case only a few holding off a couple of hundred. There are fewer people in this world, and more non-people. It is an interesting tale, which I really enjoyed. I am looking forward to the following installment.

Aside from the names Beowulf and Hrothgar, this awful single season series has exactly zero to do with the Scandinavian epic. Instead, the creators have, quite blatantly, attempted to glom off the success of Game Of Thrones; from the music, to the opening credits sequence, to the political machinations, everything here is a much, much weaker version of that seen in the near-perfect GOT.

This show offers a cast completely bereft of charisma. The absolutely horrible fight sequences are far and few between in what you'd think would be an action-rich show. And then there's William Hurt, in ghostlike flashbacks, affecting a poor English accent in order to sound Danish? The only things that are at all worthwhile are the (completely anachronistic) sets and (some of) the CGI monsters.

In this terrible series, not only is Grendel not a factor but Beowulf is merely an above average swordsman, not the superhero from the epic.

There are many reasons this lasted only a single season. Skip it!
