A must-listen for music lovers. This set highlights several important areas of Miles' music, the first being the evolution of his band leading into his fusion breakthrough "In A Silent Way." The set begins with sessions in the fall of 1968 when the band was still a 5-piece (Davis, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Tony Williams). A couple months later, Herbie Hancock joined, followed by Joe Zawinul not long after. And with the addition of John McLaughlin, the famous fusion lineup was complete, and it's a real treat to hear the music evolve over the course of these few months. This set also highlights just how different the music on the "In A Silent Way" record was from its original studio recordings. It's common knowledge that Miles and producer Teo Macero edited the pieces quite a bit for the proper album, but this release shows just how radical those edits were. "Shhh/Peaceful" is a completely different beast in its studio take, with a recurring slinky bassline that never made it into the final cut - the finished piece focuses on the most ambient and "floating" sections of the take, beginning toward the end and eventually looping back around on itself. Anyone with even a passing interest in jazz needs to listen to this wonderful set.
