When you want – NEED—something funny, but you demand intelligence, wit, satire, and a bit of seriousness mixed in, you are asking for Terry Pratchett… and you’re asking for *The Truth.*

The more-or-less benevolent dictator of Ank-Morpork, Lord Vetinari, has never much liked the idea of a free press, the truth being so inconvenient to the tight running of a city. So there is no newspaper in his city. William de Worde has been scratching out a living by reporting news items to a handful of political leaders around the area. To make sure each leader gets the same news, he has a printer do a wood cut of his news and print off several sheets for mailing.

When some dwarves show William how to do this all faster and cheaper with moveable type – and to easily print extra copies to sell on the street – his life changes overnight. At the same time, some political thugs hatch a plot to kidnap Lord Vetinari and blame him for crimes. William takes on the dangerous job of reporting the Truth. The story also includes a romance, dangerous sausages, a multiple-personality newspaper hawker, and a talking dog, so all of your humor needs are covered in one novel! A great book for our times, where the freedom of the press is daily threatened by politicians. And it is laugh-aloud funny.

One of my favs, not sure if I got the whole text I downloaded the 2nd copy of this from the catalogue but it cheered up my surgery recovery very much, a wry, funny read about real journalism whatever that may be in these strange times...

Appropriate for the times. Pratchett brings his usual wit and insight to the topics of journalism, politics, and the truth, as Ankh-Morpork heads towards its next century. Mafia movies are also part of this satirical stew. All-in-all, another great Discworld novel.

another laugh out loud, rollicking good time from Terry Pratchett. A view of journalism at its very finest.
