"A dazzlingly accomplished debut collection explores the ties that bind parents and children, husbands and wives, lovers and friends to one another and to the places they call home. In "Who will greet you at home," a National Magazine Award finalist for The New Yorker, a woman desperate for a child weaves one out of hair, with unsettling results. In "Wild," a disastrous night out shifts a teenager and her Nigerian cousin onto uneasy common ground. In "The future looks good," three generations of women are haunted by the ghosts of war, while in "Light," a father struggles to protect and empower the daughter he loves. And in the title story, in a world ravaged by flood and riven by class, experts have discovered how to "fix the equation of a person" - with rippling, unforeseen repercussions. This collection of stories is very well written; words distilled down to a potent kind of story telling that is full of flawed characters and hard lessons. She takes familiar and sometimes ugly elements of the human condition and weaves them together with the fantastical to create captivating narratives. Her stories are hard, or sharp, or salty, or blunt. I'm looking forward to reading more.

I first heard about Lesley Nneka Arimah's book of short stories, What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky on instagram and it was the book's title & Jamaica green front cover that compelled me to borrow it from the library. I enjoyed the majority of the stories in the book, especially Windfalls, What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky, and Glory. I'd love to see Arimah turn When A Man Falls From The Sky the short story into a novel because I'd definitely read it!

These are really good stories about women and girls in Nigeria and the US. Each is good in a different way - startling, magic realism, changing perspectives, realistic.

Not for the faint of heart, but definitely for fans of beautifully written prose and provocative stories.

In this dozen short stories, Arimah evokes people and places you will not soon forget. The first story is so startling, so breathtaking in its ending, I was left speechless, and immediately reread it.

Each story opens worlds and characters which has left me waiting for her next book with great anticipation.

These short stories are fantastic (sometimes literally!) Recommended for fans of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's emotional character development, and Helen Oyeyemi's magical/mystical story premises.
