In the 1870s, young Mattie Ross learns that her beloved father was gunned down by his former handyman. But even though this gutsy 14-year-old is seeking vengeance, she is smart enough to figure out she can't go alone after a desperado who's holed up in Indian territory. With some fast-talking, she convinces mean, one-eyed US Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn into going after the despicable outlaw with her.

Listening to Mattie brought to life by the skilled narrator of this audio (Donna Tartt) was an absolute delight. Her adventures played out like a movie in my head as she went on her quest for vengeance against the man who had killed her father. As a bonus, the CD has an essay by the narrator where she talks about her love for the book and her thoughts about its place in American literature. I agree that it should be treated as the classic that it is, I have read few stories that draw the reader in with such remarkable characters and a thrilling plot. I highly recommend it--don't get hung up on the western setting, Mattie's spunk and wit will win you over, even if you dislike the horse riding and gun fighting

Donna Tartt is not the best audio book reader. Perhaps she got this gig b/c she's a published author. Some of her characters' voices are pretty rough.
The story is excellent. A very good read. I don't know if this applies to an audio book, but I couldn't put it down.
