Every night, tiny stars appear out of the darkness in little Sandy's bedroom. She catches them and creates wonderful creatures to play with until she falls asleep, and in the morning brings them back to life in the whimsical drawings that cover her room. One day, Morpie, a mysterious pale girl, appears at school. And she knows all about Sandy's drawings... Nightlights is a beautiful story about fear, insecurity, and creativity, from the enchanting imagination of Lorena Gomez.

Absolutely gorgeous and just the right amount of creepy, just in time for Halloween. My ten-year-old self would have snuggled under the covers with a flashlight in delight reading this.

A beautifully illustrated book that is also downright creepy. Perfect for kids who love chilling stories and lots of illustrations.

My 9-year-old son, who's as reluctant as they come about reading, and whose policy about books is usually "anything but manga need not apply" begrudgingly agreed to give this one a try, his interest piqued by the beautiful illustrations. He finished it in two sittings. Then asked, "Can you get me the next one in the series?" Umm, Lorena Alvarez, can you help me with that?

Sandy has a talent for drawing, and a fertile imagination. So fertile in fact, that monsters are attracted to her. At first, Sandy doesn't realize the danger she is in; she attends a Catholic school, has trouble making friends, and is repeatedly told to not waste her time daydreaming. Her dreams and drawings are integral to her though. At night she transforms glowing purple nightlights into fantastical creatures. These scenes break out from the paneled layout of the others in a burst of full page, full blown colour. While Sandy prefers this world to that of the mundane, she does realize by the end that paying attention to the later can have its benefits. The knowledge she learns in class actually saves her from the monsters that want to monopolize her. Nightlights is a beautiful picture book-sized graphic novel that portrays the power of a child's imagination. The rounded character designs are very cute, the palette with its purplish overtone is magical, the brave and clever little girl has quite a bit of depth, and the dialogue provides just the right amount of verbal context.

This book blew my mind with the incredible artwork, the simple yet profound story, and the fierce little protagonist. As soon as I finished it I flipped back to the front and started it again. Truly a beautiful work.

Wonderful artwork and a surprisingly deep story that is entirely approachable for a wide range of ages.

The images that the artist creates tell the story with nothing left to desire. Her writing is sparse but perfectly executed. I interpreted the graphic novel as the story of believing in your own self-worth regardless of what any outside influences have to say about you. Both praise and criticism can lead to delusion.

This book is worth the read for the illustrations alone! It also happens to have a fantastic ghost story with just enough creepiness. Perfect for Coraline or Doll Bones fans.
