Set in pre-Independence Ireland, the local Anglo-Irish gentry manages life among the locals. Storylines are uneven (some better than others; the harrier hunt and prank is quite funny, the poteen story is shot through with drunken Irish stereotypes although there's a thread of a friendship betrayed between the English magistrate and the local brewer) and there's an archaic paternalism going on underneath the plotline (the Irish are often portrayed as superstitious, wordy, and untrustworthy). If you have spare time during a rainy afternoon, an interesting peek into a faded empire.
