The 100 most substantive solutions to reverse global warming, based on meticulous research by leading scientists and policymakers around the world

"At this point in time, the Drawdown book is exactly what is needed; a credible, conservative solution-by-solution narrative that we can do it. Reading it is an effective inoculation against the widespread perception of doom that humanity cannot and will not solve the climate crisis. Reported by-effects include increased determination and a sense of grounded hope." --Per Espen Stoknes, Author, What We Think About When We Try Not To Think About Global Warming

"There's been no real way for ordinary people to get an understanding of what they can do and what impact it can have. There remains no single, comprehensive, reliable compendium of carbon-reduction solutions across sectors. At least until now. . . . The public is hungry for this kind of practical wisdom." --David Roberts, Vox

"This is the ideal environmental sciences textbook--only it is too interesting and inspiring to be called a textbook." --Peter Kareiva, Director of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, UCLA

In the face of widespread fear and apathy, an international coalition of researchers, professionals, and scientists have come together to offer a set of realistic and bold solutions to climate change. One hundred techniques and practices are described here--some are well known; some you may have never heard of. They range from clean energy to educating girls in lower-income countries to land use practices that pull carbon out of the air. The solutions exist, are economically viable, and communities throughout the world are currently enacting them with skill and determination. If deployed collectively on a global scale over the next thirty years, they represent a credible path forward, not just to slow the earth's warming but to reach drawdown, that point in time when greenhouse gases in the atmosphere peak and begin to decline. These measures promise cascading benefits to human health, security, prosperity, and well-being--giving us every reason to see this planetary crisis as an opportunity to create a just and livable world.

The bold title of the book belies the content. I did not read every page word-for-word, however, there does not seem to be much about the drawing down of carbon-containing gases from the atmosphere. Like most books on this topic, it's mostly about reducing emission of greenhouse gases from our products and activities. Largely ignored are footprints of the materials, transport, and labor involved in creating the lower-footprint devices and machines.

Information and inspiration on every page. Many innovations for earth ecology that mainstream media does not talk about; solar panel road tiles in Georgia USA, mats being woven with discarded fishing nets in the Philippines. The most impressive to me is the story of the man in Burkino Faso in Africa who speaks only his tribal dialect and is a pioneer in agro forestry in the desert.

Excellent read! Who can even name the "Top 10" of things that'll help (to Drawdown CO2 from the atmosphere, thereby helping climate change), ... and once you see this one, it'll be eye-opening. However, the books advantage to me is a very readable page or two on 80 actions that will help -- a nice balance between a trite mention of something and an academic treatise of each of those 80 items. Very readable, very "level-headed".

This is a book that everyone should take the time to read - it provides hope in dealing with the greatest crisis of our time, global warming/climate change. The book compiles research from a large number of reliable sources globally to figure out the impact of 100 strategies on reducing the level of greenhouse gases. The strategies have then been ranked. Interestingly the top strategy is to deal with refrigerants - the HFCs that replaced the ozone damaging CFCs have proved to be particularly potent greenhouse gases. Many of the top strategies relate to food and its production. Knowing the impact that food waste and eating meat have on global warming will encourage many to adjust their feeding habits. Indeed there are many strategies that the average person can adopt without a dramatic change in the way they live. In doing so often there is a savings to be had along the way. I urge you to read this book and talk about it with your family and friends - we all need the conversation now so we can make the changes needed to ensure a healthy planet for future generations.

I can not believe there are NO COMMENTS for this book yet! It is the most important book I have read in years!! This book will give you hope that we CAN solve AND REVERSE global warming and climate change!

The first really important thing we have to recognize is that it is NOT ENOUGH to reduce, slow, or even stop emissions; we have to “draw down” and re-sequester the carbon that is already in the atmosphere. The Paris Accord (which the US is trying to abandon) is a good start, but it is not the whole solution. “If you are traveling down the wrong road, you are still on the wrong road even if you slow down. The only goal that makes sense for humanity is to reverse global warming, and if parents, scientists, young people, leaders, and we citizens do not name the goal, there is little chance it will be achieved.”

This truly amazing book was written for lay people by the people who know the most about climate change and how to fix it. There are 100 strategies discussed in the book. Each strategy is discussed in only 1-2 pages. Where possible, the scientists have modeled what would happen if the strategy were scaled up and implemented widely: how many gigatons of carbon dioxide it would remove from the air from 2020 to 2050; how much it would cost to purchase, install and operate for 30 years; and how much net savings would result over the same 30 years. In most cases, the payback periods are short, and the net savings are huge. The strategies are ranked in order of their impact.

Amazingly, almost all of the solutions compiled and analyzed in this book are “no regrets” solutions, initiatives that we would want to achieve regardless of the impact on emissions and climate, as they are practices that benefit society and the environment in multiple ways: They create security, produce jobs, improve health, save money, facilitate mobility, eliminate hunger, prevent pollution, restore soil, clean rivers, and more.

This book makes these important points: (1) Our individual actions and choices do have an impact on climate change, but the biggest impact we can have as individuals is to join the movement to demand action. In a world of apathy, 5% or 10% of people pushing for solutions can make a huge difference.

Do not despair because you think it is too late or too big to solve. If you read this book, you will be better informed and you will be able to take action, including electing leaders that “believe in science.” Just think where we might be if the US Supreme Court had not stopped the Florida recount in 2000! If Al Gore had been President instead of George W. Bush, we would be a lot closer to solving this problem than we are today.

(2) The expense of the problems of climate change far exceed the costs of the solutions. Following the strategies to reverse climate change will not only help save the planet, they will also be better for our economy than staying the course with fossil fuels. In other words, we can earn greater profits by adopting these strategies than we can ever achieve by staying with business as usual, PLUS we could save the only planet we have! It is totally irrational to resist the progress that these strategies would give us. It is a win-win!

PLEASE read this book and tell others about it! We can solve this problem!
