Joshua Speed and Lincoln shared lodgings from 1837 thru 1841, and remained lifelong friends after Speed's return to Louisville Kentucky. The author's background as a trial lawyer, and as an "avid amateur Lincoln scholar", add much this mystery. In truth, the narrator Joshua Speed takes the role of investigator while Lincoln makes sure that justice is done. Putnam peoples his story with historical figures and paints a lively, interesting portrait of Springfield 1837 without getting the reader bogged down in too much historical detail. An excellent debut mystery.
