This movie was a rite of passage when it came out in 1986. I think I saw it three times at the movie theater upon its initial release. Watching The Criterion Collection DVD the other night I wondered what it was in the film that spoke to me back then. Sid and Nancy are completely unappealing: infantile, narcissistic, squalid junkies (eight-year's dead by the time the movie premiered). John Lydon is on record excoriating SID & NANCY for being entirely inaccurate, which, interestingly, director Alex Cox, in an interview that is part of a second DVD of extras, agrees with, acknowledging that he overly romanticized the ending (with an angelic Nancy in a wedding dress) to please his financial backers. But for all that I think the appeal of the movie is a kind of necromancy. We youth of the Reagan era had no cultural movements to knit us together like the Hippies and the first wave Punks had. We had "Rock Against Reagan" and hardcore, but it was limited in its reach and, truth be told, largely reactionary. To watch Sid and Nancy stoned and cuddling in bed in their dark and dirty Chelsea Hotel room was our "Chicken Soup for the Soul."

(Favourite movie quote) - "Never trust a junkie."

(*Spoiler Alert!*)

If you ask me, I think that director Alex Cox did a bloody fine job of thoroughly mocking the punk-rocker scene as it stood in Britain during the mid-1970s.

And, I don't think that Cox could've chosen a better band to ridicule than that of the all-mighty "Sex Pistols", who were headlined by such talentless slime as Johnny Rotten and sleazy Sid Vicious.

In this grungy, greasy, gooey "Romeo & Juliet" story (punk-rocker style) it seems that everyone (and, I do mean "everyone") goes out, in one way or another, in a literal "blaze-of-glory".

One of this film's biggest and most comical highlights (and there were certainly others) was Sid Vicious (during his "solo" career) performing "I Did It My Way!" for an outrageously over-the-top MTV video.

With its depressingly graphic depiction of low-life, drug addiction and its incessant use of the vilest profanity imaginable, Sid & Nancy certainly isn't a film for everyone's enjoyment. But, if nothing else, it definitely does give the viewer quite a revealing (though not totally accurate) look at a particularly peculiar era in the history of pop music.

This "unique" film tells the tragic, true-life story of Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. I am still in the process of digesting everything that I've seen. It's an intense film for sure that leaves me feeling somewhat depressed. I like the punk clothes and hairstyles from back then but not the lifestyle, especially not the drug use. It's a sad to see how so many people like Sid and Nancy decline like they did. This film, however, should have given us a bit of a back-story on Sid and Nancy to help us care for them more. If I'd known how they ended up as they were then maybe I'd understand this film better. It's not for everyone.

Hey, I just want people to know that this DVD is not the Criterion Collection DVD even though that is the picture that shows up. I suspect that the high number of holds on this is because people are looking for that edition. This is the barebones DVD of just the movie
