"A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author--an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magic, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives... It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed--and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river--or in the ones you know and love the most. As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive"--

The story line and characters grabbed right from the start. Not your usual Nora Roberts novel but loved it!!!! Can't wait to read book 2.

I must have gotten off to a poor start with this read. There's a difference between whiskey & whisky - poor research/knowledge. As for the story. It got so far fetched I simply skimmed & sighed. This could have been really good due to the subject. No stars.

I read the first 125 pages of this book - but just couldn't get into it. It's too much science fiction for me.

Very different for the author; very good. When is the next one coming out?

Check out the first book in the Chronicles of The One series before book 2 comes out later this year. With twists and turns on every page, Nora Roberts has captured the audience in this tale of intrigue.

I am a big fan of Nora Roberts. I don't mind waiting for months for her book as they are worth it.
I had a slow start with this book. But once I caught up, couldn't put it down.
Loved it.
Waiting for the next in series.

Wasn't sure about this book but I pushed on. Caught my interest and now can't wait for the next in the series!
When is book 2 available?

I was not sure about this new trilogy from Nora Roberts. It took me a couple stops and starts to really get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Definitely not for everyone. I felt the last third of the book was a little rushed and clearly a setup for the books to come. If you're a fan of older series like Chesapeake Bay or In the Garden, you might want to give this new series, Chronicles of the One, a pass or at least be warned that this is not a nice, contemporary love story. I can't say that Year One is a favorite, but it was intriguing enough that I'm looking forward to the books to come.
