The Nolans lived in the Williamsburg slums of Brooklyn from 1902 until 1919. Their daughter, Francie, and their son, Neely, knew more than their fair share of the privations and sufferings that are the lot of a great city's poor.

A warm and inspiring story I would encourage all to read. After I listened to this story, I reflected upon the events, struggles, and turmoils of today compared to the similar issues of the early 1900's. There is a lot of inspiration in this story about life and overcoming so many struggles in life. A story about life, family, poverty, prejudice, traditions, and so many other facets of life, which we all have to confront one time or another.

It was the bond of family, both immediate and extended, which struck me so much. This was not the idealistic "Leave it to Beaver" family. Instead, a real family with its problems and sins laid right out there for you. Yet, even with all the problems, a family which struggled together for the benefit of all, who forgave, who supported one another, who stood by one another.

As a result and through the strength and support of family, a young girl grows up, preservers, overcomes, and becomes a woman. In her journey in life, so much changes for her, how she overcomes death, disappointment, travail, agony, and all the rest. At the center, the one constant she finds, for good and bad, is her family. The strength, energy, determination, and endurance, is the foundation which provides her the ability to survive and persevere.

The ending was exceptionally well done. It really doesn't end, but leaves you, the reader, to your own imagination as to her future. You are left with an end of a time, an end of an episode of her life, as she ventures onto new horizons and adventures. You get to draw you're own conclusions. Delightful.
