At the age of sixty, Cory Taylor was dying of melanoma-related brain cancer. With her illness no longer treatable, she began at the start of 2016 to write about her experiences and, in an extraordinary creative surge, wrote what would become Dying: A Memoir. This is a brief and clear-eyed account of what dying taught Cory: amid the tangle of her feelings, she reflects on the patterns of her life, and remembers the lives and deaths of her parents. She tells us why she would like to be able to choose the circumstances of her own death. Dying is about the vulnerability and strength, courage and humility, anger and acceptance that it takes to live a good life and say goodbye to it in peace.

It's really difficult to *rate* a book like this - an intimate emotional glimpse into a dying woman's last thoughts. I'd recommend for folks who enjoyed Being Mortal by Atul Gawande and When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. More personal rather than academic/medical, with some dark humor sprinkled throughout.

I had high hopes for this book but, for me, it didn't deliver. I had seen the author talk on an ABC television program "You can't ask that!" and was moved by her predicament as someone dying in their 60s from melanoma. I thought the book would be more reflective about life and death but, instead, it was really just a memoir focusing primarily on her parents.

Stark and raw memoir of facing the prospect of death and leaving behind a life you're not ready to leave. So many of the author's observations and thoughts hit you hard when you realise that if you were faced with the same prospect, you would probably feel the same. A sobering reminder that you need to extract as much as you can from your life while you can. Was saddened to read that the author passed away in July.
