Fantastic documentary! When referring to people trying to get in to the Guiness Book of World Records, the daughter of one of the top contenders competing for the highest score in Donkey Kong said it best. "Some people sort of ruin their lives to be in there."

Portraying Wiebe as a downtrodden yet loveable family man whose entire life has been one big disappointment after another and Mitchell, a successful entrepreneur, as a monumental douche with an ego to match (and a ridiculously outdated rockabilly hairdo) Gordon kicks objectivity to the curb and instead delivers a geeky David vs Goliath smackdown of epic proportions. The fact that both men are actually friends in real life and have protested Gordon’s skewing of the truth hardly matters as the director charges headfirst into the cutthroat culture of arcade competitions where Machiavellian schemings and zealous referees determine who gets a place in the record books and just about everyone seems to be exhibiting one psychiatric diagnosis or another. The talking heads are funny (this stuff is serious, man!), the background history fascinating, and Gordon keeps the pace as brisk as the retro games themselves. Be sure to stay through the closing credits.

A hilarious documentary is a rarity, and this one is funnier than most comedy films. It feels a bit like Rocky and a lot like a Christopher Guest mockumentary (Best In Show, A Mighty Wind, etc.). Its director Seth Gordon went on to direct Four Christmases, Freakonomics, Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief.

Hard to believe until you watch this! Battle of good vs. evil and the battleground is...King Kong. Full of 80s arcade nostalgia.

When I saw this movie at my beloved Alamo Drafthouse they introduced it as the battle of good vs evil. I thought to myself "well that is a bit over the top don't you think?" Afterwards I was like "holy s**t! that really was the battle of good vs evil. This movie is a MUST SEE!

Worst. Movie. Ever.

Interesting and fun to watch. Felt odd to see all those old games I used to play.

Generally speaking this can be for most ages, however, there is a brief moment in the middle of the film where there are some old playgirl layouts which some parents may feel inappropriate for their children to see.

I love documentaries with quirky subject matter. This is the best of human drama, highly entertaining!

If I told you this movie revolves around a guy who claims the world record for Donkey Kong, the self-appointed referee of the gaming world, and a guy who loses his job and decides to go for the Donkey Kong world record, would you think some of these people might be a little bit weird? Of course they are weird – who wants to see a movie about normal people. And in fact, the guy going for the record seems remarkably well adjusted, but perhaps that’s only in contrast to the other two who are batshit crazy.

I don’t want to give away too much of the story but the basic plot line is above. And I really enjoyed it. I found myself rooting for some of the characters and rooting against others. And I learned there’s a whole little world out there that most of us know nothing about.

Recommended by me.

I had no idea that videogames were this competitive.
