"Jim Byrd died. Technically. For a few minutes. The diagnosis: heart attack at age thirty. Revived with no memory of any tunnels, lights, or angels, Jim wonders what--if anything--awaits us on the other side. Then a ghost shows up. Maybe. Jim and his new wife, Annie, find themselves tangling with holograms, psychics, messages from the beyond, and a machine that connects the living and the dead. As Jim and Annie journey through history and fumble through faith, they confront the specter of loss that looms for anyone who dares to fall in love."--

If someone had told me the plot to The Afterlives, I'm certain I'd have said, No Thanks. I read a snippet touting the novel and the next day found an advanced reader copy in a neighborhood free library. I started reading and had a difficult time putting it down. The story is about the living, the dead, what happens during our time and what happens after. I liked the tone and voice of the narrator. The stories kept me interested and the ending all worked. I'm even having a hard time explaining why I liked it but I really really enjoyed it.
