A graphic memoir of eating disorders, abuse and recovery. Lighter Than My Shadow is a hand-drawn story of struggle and recovery, a trip into the black heart of a taboo illness; an exposure of those who are so weak as to prey on the weak, and an inspiration to anybody who believes in the human power to endure towards happiness.

The book was beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful, a graphic novel worth reading. I will note that it deals very frankly with issues of eating disorders and sexual abuse so if this is something that you find challenging it is something you will need to take into consideration in deciding to read this graphic novel.

The author, a young woman artist, candidly documents her personal struggles with a mental illness related to obsession, self-control, body image, and food. It's tragic and hopeful in equal measures.

This is a very personal account of a young woman who has struggled with an eating disorder her whole life. It was very interesting to see the evolution of her life and progress with her eating disorder. I found it heavy but still easy enough to get through. Worth reading whether you have known someone with an eating disorder, struggled with one yourself or are just wanting an insider perspective on what someone with an eating disorder may go through.

Katie Green presents an honest personal account of her lifelong battle with an eating disorder. Some images are disturbing and the content is heavy, but I think this is a must read for older teens and adults who have ever experienced issues with addiction, sexual abuse, mental illness, or would like to gain an immersed view of this perspective. The illustrations are powerfully drawn and really bring the story to life.

This graphic novel is definitely one that I would put on my top ten list. Some may find the topics of eating disorders, body image and sexual abuse too controversial. But Katie Green does a masterful job of delivering these issues in a format that encourages further female discussion.
The author/artist does a wonderful job of communicating a pictorial memoir full of heart of adversity. I hope to see more works by this rising young female graphic novelist.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: The art work is not especially explicit but there is some nudity and it can be intense at times due to the nature of eating disorders and abuse.
