"A six-year project from conception to completion, this thirteen-hour, seven volume video collection carefully analyzes the costs and consequences of this controversial but intriguing war. From the first episode, Roots of a War, to the last, Legacies, it provides a detailed visual and oral account of the war that changed a generation and continues to color American thinking on many military and foreign policy issues."--Publisher's web site.

VIETNAM: A TELEVISION HISTORY was a very important event in the 1980s. It is a dissection from a mainstream perspective of the folly and the hubris of the United States' military engagement in Vietnam. What I took away from seeing it again last month is how completely tilted mainstream perception is now towards neoconservatism -- that there is no limit to America's full spectrum military dominance. This was not the case in the early to mid-1980s (what is referred to as "Vietnam Syndrome"). Then there were a series of splendid little wars (Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm) followed by 9/11, and today the body politic has completely assimilated its steady diet of unending military conflict -- until something catastrophic happens like war on the Korean Peninsula. It'll be interesting to watch the Ken Burns VIETNAM to see how it compares.

Very disappointing! The contents of the 4 videodisk set have been extensively edited. An awful lot of the best interviews and archival film footage have been removed from the originally televised version.
