Marion Cotillard and Alex Brendemühl illuminate this film with their gritty depiction of a loveless marriage. Both main characters have some growing up/healing to do (the highly reserved Alex has resettled in France after being forced out of Spain by the Civil War.) This is set in conformist 1950s France, so a passionate, mercurial, and openly sexual Marion is considered--if not insane--at the very least urgently in need of being married off so she can get the 1950s ring of respectability. The movie earns its worth in the second half, where she attends a luxury sanitarium/spa and meets a fallen war hero who shares her romanticism. There are moments of what could have been versus what turns out to be real. The French countryside and seaside is a beautiful setting: harvesting fresh lavender on the family farm takes on a lyrical quality. Note: in French with English subtitles.

The blue skirt, lavender field, Côte d'Azur, blue melody June and Wuthering Heights! Adapted from an Italian lady's novel, a story about a Lyon man, a Catalan man and a Provence woman, with Brigitte-Bardot-esque hair styles and dresses.
