A very insightful, instructive, often humorous book that is also a cautionary revelation of how much difficulty and rejection is typically the major part of even successful actors' lives. Sample advice:
if you feel you must work in such a competitive field, rather that continually battling for that breakthrough stroke of luck you been knocking yourself out preparing for, you may be better off creating (often with your group of friends) your own film or theater production to achieve the recognition and opportunity you need. (I'm reminded of Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" script.)

You know, I am much more likely to be a hermit in a dank, dark cave somewhere, than be on a stage performing for people. But, when I saw Jenna Fischer’s book, “The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide”, I knew I just had to read it. Because I think Jenna Fischer is . . . really neat. Yes, I am a fan. So much so that I told my wife that if Jenna Fischer were to knock on our door and ask me to run away with her, well, I’d have to consider it. She said that was okay, but the same thing goes for her and James Pankow (trombonist/songwriter for the band Chicago). Anyway, “The Actor’s Life” is an entertaining and informative read that has lots of common sense advice, insight, and encouragement for the aspiring thespian. Jenna includes more than a few anecdotes detailing her struggles to get work and hone her craft. She went eight long years, fueled by determination and grit, believing in herself when it seemed that no one else did, until her big break came along with “The Office”. She had prepared herself to succeed, and while reading her book does not guarantee the success that she has had, I believe that “The Actor’s Life” would be quite useful to those considering a career in show biz. Plus, it was written by Jenna Fischer!

I basically inhaled this fantastic book from Jenna Fischer and enjoyed reading about her life so much. This isn’t a book about a famous actor and their rise to fame and it isn’t a comedy biography, this is a handbook on how to make it as an actor. Jenna goes through the steps with informative advice and knowledge while also sharing her own personal events, tips and tricks. You’ll follow through the process of acting classes, headshots, agents, callbacks, rejection, success and more. I have no intention to ever be an actor but if I did this would be the book for me because it’s full of insightful and helpful guidelines to become successful. I also loved reading about Jenna Fischer’s life and industry experience because she wrote in a wonderfully interesting and addictive way so I couldn’t put this book down until I finished it.
