Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in the huge city of London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice. Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to infiltrate the establishment and thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk.

Because of the subject matter, this novel is not a great work by this author. I love Herron's Slow Horse, series but there is little of the snaky dialogue or great characters in this read. In this book, not only are the characters more like a caricature study, but they are not very likable, as either a villain or a victim. I'm hoping his next Slow Horse novel returns to his fine form. Truthfully, if it had been any other author, I would have abandoned the book by page 50.

Definitely not the spy novel that's advertised on the jacket... but an interesting read nonetheless. I'd recommend it to someone who's looking for a unique read that acts as a shallow dive into the mind of Stockholm Syndrome and sociopaths. I think the ending could have used another five to ten pages to really wrap everything up. I'd have liked to see how a couple things play out. Completed 4/11/18.
