Our Native Bees
North America's Endangered Pollinators and the Fight to Save Them
Book - 2018
A New York Times 2018 Holiday Gift Selection
Honey bees get all the press, but the fascinating story of North America's native bees--endangered species essential to our ecosystems and food supplies--is just as crucial. Through interviews with farmers, gardeners, scientists, and bee experts, Our Native Bees explores the importance of native bees and focuses on why they play a key role in gardening and agriculture. The people and stories are compelling: Paige Embry goes on a bee hunt with the world expert on the likely extinct Franklin's bumble bee, raises blue orchard bees in her refrigerator, and learns about an organization that turns the out-of-play areas in golf courses into pollinator habitats. Our Native Bees is a fascinating, must-read for fans of natural history and science and anyone curious about bees.

Add a CommentI already liked bees a lot before I read this ,but even if you're just curious and want to find out more, this is a wonderful introduction to our native bees. The author's enthusiasm and passion comes through in her entertaining and informative writing. Who knew our bees could be so varied, clever and interesting! This book has inspired me to want to learn more and find out ways I can help our buzzy pollinators.
One those books that changed my perspective on things I see everyday, but don't really notice. I love when that happens.
This book made me love bees! I had no idea we had so many native bees and Embry is really excellent in bringing them all to life. The photography in the book is also excellent. I didn't know bees could be so adorable -- or that they could be green! While it's true that our native bees are struggling right now, this book is overall optimistic in tone and I was left feeling like there is stuff out there even I can do to help.
