I loved this book. The writer has that talent of transporting you to a level of thought and contemplation with simple language. I kept thinking of Faulkner, Hemingway. I felt like I lost my way at one point, but I was just along for the ride with the rich complex characters he flushes out with a richly described landscape. I think a reader has to have a good knowledge of the American novel to “Get” how good this is!

Some books you read to enjoy. This is not one of those books. Washington native Bruce Holbert's third novel comes out of the dirty/gritty realism school of writing. These are small, screwed up lives set in bleak small towns where adultery, alcoholism, casual violence, rage, and loveless sex rule. I would advise reading this with some bottom shelf whiskey. Like that, you won't really enjoy it, but you'll feel compelled to finish it. Don't take this one to the beach!
