Mara Tagarelli is, professionally, the head of a multimillion-dollar AIDS foundation; personally, she is a committed martial artist. But her life has turned inside out like a sock. She can't rely on family, her body is letting her down, and friends and colleagues are turning away--they treat her like a victim. She needs to break that narrative: build her own community, learn new strengths, and fight. But what do you do when you find out that the story you've been told, the story you've told yourself, is not true? How can you fight if you can't trust your body? Who can you rely on if those around you don't have your best interests at heart, and the systems designed to help do more harm than good? Mara makes a decision and acts, but her actions unleash monsters aimed squarely at the heart of her new community.

This is a very good read, especially if you know anyone with MS or some other debilitating disease. There is a good story in this, too, so don't worry about it being another depressing story with an uplifting ending. This protagonist is fueled mostly by anger, which sometimes raises to white hot rage. She is angry at the way people look at her as a cripple, or how fellow MS suffers portray themselves as victims, she despises the big Pharma companies that don't understand the science behind their drugs, but make a lot of money at it. MS societies only want data that they can sell to other parties and you end up on a mailing list for cane companies and wheelchair businesses. The anger spills into rage at any time, and even her own body is not spared from this anger.

I do not think I've ever read a book that has so much anger in it but is still well worth reading. I admired the entire journey, and found it breathtaking at times.

It's good but challenging. Accurate description of MS symptoms, therapies, drugs, and frustrations but from a position of relative privilege.
