On September 29, 1981, Peter Turner received a phone call that would change his life. His former lover, Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame, had collapsed in a Lancaster hotel and was refusing medical attention. He took her into his chaotic and eccentric home in Liverpool to see her through her last days. Though their affair had ended years before, it was to him that she turned in her final hour of need. Takes place over the course of three weeks in Turner's working class family home.

Great acting by Benning and Bell. Sad love story.

Lovely film, touching, great acting. Annette & Jamie pull off what would be a very unlikely love affair & make it feel real. Based on a true story, the storyline moves backwards & forwards in time, showing the experience from both prospective. Big thumbs up, unsure why this didn't get more acknowledgement when it was released.

This romantic/drama stars Jamie Bell and Annette Bening, and actually has quite the interesting story. After Hollywood actress Gloria meets a young man and falls in love, she gets diagnosed with breast cancer, which in the 1970’s is basically a death sentence. I will admit, that this movie sounds better on paper than it really was, which is to no fault other than that of the writers and directors. Some scenes felt rushed while others felt too long, and sometimes the dialogue was extremely realistic and other times it just felt too Hollywood. I would rate this movie 3.5/5 stars for what it could have been. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Sweet film. Benning gives a great performance - so does Bell.

Very slow. Just didn't appeal to me. I like Benning and Redgrave but felt like this was mainly contrived to provide something for them to appear in. I understand it's based on a true story but about 2/3 through......I thought....I've got other stuff to do and I'm not enjoying, moved, or entertained by this......ejected and moved on.

Peter Turner wrote the story of his relationship with Gloria Grahame in 1986 - now made into this movie.
I was recently reminded of Gloria when I re-watched 1952's The Greatest Show on Earth - the first movie I remember seeing as a child. I don't think I've seen any of her other films.

this is an interesting story of the last few years of her life involved in a relationship with Peter, a much younger actor she met in London - relying on him and his family as she faced a health crisis at the end of her life.
do film stars die in Liverpool? - watch and find out.....

Jamie Bell is mesmerizing.
The acting is exquisitely beautiful.

A wonderful love story with a great soundtrack too.

Another great performance from Annette Bening. Without her this movie wouldn’t add up to much.

Very touching film. I recommend viewing the interviews and commentary portions of the DVD which provide insight to the life of Gloria Grahame and the last few years of her life as portrayed in this film which are taken from the book by Peter Turner. Benning is at the top of her game. A fine actress working with a cast of excellent peers. Highly recommend, including a box of kleenex handy.

The title alone was enough to entice this viewer. Good performances from Annette Bening and also from a grown up Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell), however not much else other than the the scouser accents. Apparently Gloria Grahame was an academy award winning femme fatale of film noir (enough French for everyone?) Nostalgia for some I suppose.
