A partially wordless tale about the power of words...but also about the power of wordlessness across cultural and generational divides. This is a beautiful story about a boy and his grandfather who find new ways of communicating and understanding one another. The illustrations are perfect: vivid, dynamic, and evokative! The paper itself is thick and luxurious (I love the "floop" sound of good paper pages being turned).

A beautiful story about a grandfather and grandchild finding common ground between art and storytelling with amazing illustration.

Yes the young and the old can find something in common and bond.

Although sparsely narrated, this beautifully illustrated endeavor weaves a sweeping story about love and its own unique language.

I love this picture book! Not only is the story beautiful but the illustrations are amazing!. Drawn Together connects the generational and language gap between Grandfather and Grandson through the love of drawing. From the beginning you see the two having a hard time connecting with each other until they begin to draw together creating this magical, action-packed world of two different styles that flows beautifully together.

I loved this book. Beautiful illustrations. It shows how you don't always have to speak the same language to be able to communicate with others but rather art, storytelling and actions.

What's wonderful about Drawn Together is how deftly it tells its story with little to no dialogue. Being a nearly wordless story allows it to truly embody the book's overall theme: finding a common language not in words, but in art. Both grandson and grandfather have a unique art style that shows off both the characters' personalities as well as the illustrator's talent. A must read for fans of colorful picture books!

Heartfelt story about a grandson and grandfather finding a connection through art. This does a great job at being able to both honor the differences between traditional and modern, and blending them together to show they don't always have to be separate. Great message that there is more than one way to communicate.

Drawn Together appropriately starts with silence; three pages of no dialogue between a young boy, whom afterwards we learn only speaks English, and his grandfather, who speaks a language that uses the Thai script. Their interactions are understandably awkward following this, despite the elderly man's clear delight at having his grandson over for a visit. This starts to change though when the boy brings out his drawing supplies. "In a flash" the two begin to draw a story together, communicating with each other through pictures and a shared interest. For clarity, the author has the boy narrate his thoughts from this point onwards, as a magical boy, painted in a colourful cartoony style, fights alongside a valiant warrior, illustrated in a more detailed ink only type. For the backgrounds, which display a fantastical ancient world, these two mix together. The pair's newfound means of bonding doesn't come without difficulty though, but together they battle through, picking up something from the other (which is visually represented in a stunning two page spread). Minh Lê's heartfelt story will mean a lot to anyone who has experienced a linguistic-based generational gap. While the characters are of Asian decent, those from other ethnic backgrounds will find this just as applicable and touching. Drawing Together is a picture book that can be shared by those families actually experiencing such communication difficulties now too. The concise text is a poignant insight into the boy's thoughts, however, the entire story can be understood without it thanks to Dan Santat's distinctive style. The expressive character designs, the graphic novel elements, the excellent use of space, and the pacing, all make it easy to interpret. Fans of his work will be thrilled to see him try new things in this one; the South Asian artistic influence really makes this stand out from the rest. Drawing Together is an exquisitely emotional read, that speaks to a family's ability to bridge the gulf that is language, through other means of communication. A must read!

This is such a heartwarming book! While younger readers will likely be drawn to the intricate, colorful illustrations (especially as the book is light on text), older individuals will be moved by the story: a young boy has to spend time with his grandfather, but they do not speak the same language. As a result, their initial interaction is distant and awkward. But when the boy begins to draw, his grandfather pulls out his sketchpad and paintbrush, and the two of them bond over their mutual love of art and imagination - no "talking aloud" required!
