"In this culmination of five decades of acclaimed studies in presidential history, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin offers an illuminating exploration into the early development, growth, and exercise of leadership. Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the man make the times or do the times make the man? ...Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closely--Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)--to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized by others as leaders."--Provided by publisher.

This should be "required reading" for all Americans. It is refreshingly hopeful, especially in the present Turbulent times (11.18-4.19).

This is a brilliant book about four very different men who held the most difficult job in the country in difficult times. The book looks at what drove the men to seek the job in the first place, the trials they encountered that made them capable of doing the job when they got there, the crisis that brought them to power, and how they resolved it.

Sometimes these individuals paid for their ambition with their lives, but none of them would have chosen a different path.

Doris Kearns Goodwin is a somewhat lyrical writer and I was concerned about that at first but she is also a first-rate historian and a great storyteller and used all of her gifts to the utmost to bring us these stories in a time when we truly need a leader.

Reading the book reminded me that the best leaders come when the times are darkest.
