For me the starting point of an excellent cookbook occurs when I open the book, flip through a few pages and upon looking at the photos and scanning the recipes, I immediately am motivated to start shopping for ingredients, cooking and eating. I wanted to feel this way about Simple, but the food combinations seem odd and unappealing, the photos were similarly uninspiring. I keep on reopening the book in the hope of being "stirred" to begin cooking even just once or twice, to no avail. Neither an upscale sophisticated feel nor a warm homey sense were forthcoming. I know this book is in high demand- makes me think of the story " The Emperor's New Clothes". It will have a very short stint in my possession- I suspect it won't make it into my kitchen.

I was not enchanted with Yotam Ottolenghi's recent cookbooks. But "Simple" is one of the better cookbooks from him in the sense that it contains interesting recipes for dishes with ingredients that are mostly available to a normal home cook and do not require fancy preparation techniques while still adding a twist to a lot of dishes. It contains mostly vegetable dishes, but also has limited meat, seafood and dessert sections.

Simplicity + Ottolenghi's flavour magic = a top cookbook of the season.
