If you enjoy short stories, you must read Lucia Berlin. Evening in Paradise is her most recent collection (2018), compiled posthumously from the seventy-six short stories written and published during her lifetime. “There are certain perfect particular sounds” is the first line of her one-page story “The Pony Bar, Oakland”. This collection is full of perfect particular details, characters, and settings. Many of her stories are influenced by her peripatetic, disparate life experiences. I would start with her earlier collection, A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories (on my list of best short story collections) which was named one of The New York Times Book Review’s Ten Best Books of 2015. Once you do, you’ll be grateful that you can continue with Evening in Paradise.
