Plan on sharing this book for #Juneteenth - June 19. Chronicles the exodus of Junius Groves from slavery to success.

LPL_LindaC Apr 05, 2019

Junius G. Groves was born into slavery on a plantation near Greensburg, Kentucky. He was still quite young when slavery was abolished in 1865. At the age of twenty, Junius joined the growing number of African Americans headed west. Kansas was the place to go where land was plentiful. They became known as the Exodusters. Junius G. walked five hundred miles to Kansas City, Kansas where he worked on a potato farm for wages barely enough to live on. But through hard work and a positive spirit, he worked and worked his way up. In the end, Junius G. owned more than five hundred acres of land!! And a potato farm at that! In 1900, he was called the "Potato King" of the entire Sunflower State! What an inspiring story! Rich in Kansas history, this is a book for all ages to enjoy.
