"On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. One of the world's greatest technological achievements--and a triumph of American spirit and ingenuity--the Apollo 11 mission was a mammoth undertaking involving more than 410,000 men and women dedicated to winning the space race against the Soviets. Set amid the tensions of the Cold War and the upheavals of the sixties, and filled with first-person, behind-the-scenes details, [this book] is a gripping account of the dangers, the challenges, and the sheer determination that defined not only Apollo 11, but also the Mercury and Gemini missions that came before it."--Dust jacket flap.

Mike Collins, the command module pilot for the Apollo 11 flight calls this the best book on the space race that he has read - it is researched in depth, and richly detailed in its narrative, both of the technical challenges of the intricate dance of mating spacecraft and landing module trajectories, and the narrative of the human actors who made the bold decisions and forged the teams that accomplished so much for American and for humanity. The Cold War is always present in the background, but that aspect is told here from the perspective of the Americans who remained in the dark as to the true state of the Soviet capabilities.
