"In 1924, a young mother, Hattie Breckenridge, is hanged from a tree in her yard by the town mob, accused of a crime that was actually committed by her daughter. Nearly a century later, a young married couple, Helen and Nate abandon the comforts of suburbia to begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams on the same forty-four acres of rural land where Hattie once lived. When they discover that this charming property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by Hattie's story and the tragic legend of her descendants, three generations of "Breckenridge women," each of whom died amid suspicion, and who seem to still be seeking something elusive and dangerous in the present day." --

An enjoyable, modern take on the haunted house. Instead of moving into one, the protagonist builds her own haunted house after becoming obsessed with a local family's multi generational tale of tragedy. Most of the ending was easy to figure out, but there was enough intrigue to keep me hooked until the conclusion.

This isn't your typical ghost story. It is more character-based and so it's a little slow for the average ghost-story reader. It IS however, a really good mystery, so I recommend it.

Another great ghost story from Jennifer McMahon. This and The Winter People are my 2 favourites from this author. It was really interesting and creative, lots of nature which I also enjoyed.

Effective tale of the ghost of Breckenridge Bog in Vermont, where Nate and Helen have moved to build their dream house. They meet up with Olive, a 14-year-old ragamuffin who's looking for the ghost Hattie's buried treasure on their property. Gradually, the ghost-hunting begins and their stories converge. Saw some things coming a mile away; some genuine surprises.

A very enjoyable haunted house tale that gets it's foundation from a family curse--until I got to the ending where it all kinda falls flat. A disappointment, really, since it has all the components that appeal to me: hauntings, psychic abilities, family trees and their mystery members. It even has buried treasure! For me, the story was all about Hattie and her tragic end (and those of her descendants); everyone else was secondary. Still, those other characters are interesting; young motherless Olive and her grieving father; city folks Helen and Nate who decide to build their own home in the country and inadvertently stir up Hattie's spirit. There are a few unanswered questions left hanging by the end, however. For the most part, it's such a riveting read, but the ending simply doesn't do it justice. 3.5 stars.

Absolutely loved this book!

I LOVE Jennifer McMahon! Her stories are not strictly horror but more like supernatural suspense. They always span across a few different points in time and they always suck me in with really interesting, different characters. I really liked the supernatural elements of this story and they way each section was broken up into the house building process segments. And I know we are not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but I totally love the cover.

What if you had the chance to build your own haunted house? Historically rich and eerie, this "horror light" ghost story will be perfect for you if you want to dabble in horror.

Another good one by this author, my second read from her! This is a good haunting story, different in that the house that is haunted has yet to be built! The husband and wife plan their dream house, buy the land and begin to build it themselves! The land has a horrible history with years of sightings of a woman who was wrongly accused and murdered on the property years ago!

The wife starts buying up local antiques that she reacts to, feelings she gets that she is meant to put these in her home! With these she has invited in the spirits of a family that the locals believed have haunted the area for generations.

“First, we’ve got a witch ghost, now there’s a buried treasure? Is this Scooby fucking Doo?”
